Back by popular demand! Area Stage Company proudly announces the safe and socially distanced return of their uproariously imaginative, critically acclaimed, Mainstage professional production of Shrek the Musical. This dynamic, stripped-down, renaissance theatre troupe-style production, directed by Giancarlo Rodaz and performed by seven irrepressibly talented young actors, earned rave reviews and had audiences shrieking with laughter in its 2018 run. See what you missed – or catch it again - when Shrek returns January 22nd – 31st at Area Stage Company’s brand new Outdoor Theatre in the heart of Sunset Place.

Rodaz’s intimate, inventively low-tech version of the Broadway musical, based on the 2001 Dreamworks animated hit, with score by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, was universally praised by critics. “Imagination substitutes for big budget in delightful Shrek,” proclaimed veteran theatre critic Bill Hirschman in Florida Theater On Stage, who praised “the energy, enthusiasm, imagination, and sheer talent of everyone involved” resulting in “a production often more delightful, charming and occasionally even more touching” than the $24 million 2008 Broadway original.

“Versatile, energetic, convincing and charming,” wrote Aaron Krause in Theatrical Musings. “There’s a sense of community swirling around this make-believe world.” And BroadwayWorld.com proclaimed “What's been done on the stage of Area Stage Company is not just a re-imagining, but redefining of one of this generation's most well-known stories.”

  • For the health and safety of yourself and others, all tickets will be sold by party. No individual tickets will be available, except for parties of one who will be seated by themselves. 
  • Each party (whether you select front lawn Picnic Blankets, Tier A Pods, or Tier B Pods) will be assigned a socially distanced section. 
  • We suggest pre-ordering your tickets, as tickets purchased at the door are first come, first served. 
  • You may not select your specific seats in advance within your section due to logistics involved with socially distanced seating. Your seats will be reserved for you and you will be seated upon arrival. 
  • Chairs are not permitted in the Picnic Blanket section on the front lawn, so as to provide all guests with the best possible view of the stage. You must provide your own picnic blanket.

Area Stage Company

Area Stage Company (ASC), established in 1989, is an award-winning professional theatre company that for 32 years has staged provocative, world-class theatre productions. Founded by John and Maria Rodaz, ASC originated in Miami Beach as one of the pioneers of the Miami arts community that surged in the 1980’s on Lincoln Road when the once high-end shopping area had become a dilapidated strip of empty storefronts. Since its inception, ASC has presented a mix of contemporary plays and original new works, producing numerous world premieres, quickly “changing the perception and standards of what South Florida's theatres can and should be,” according to the Sun-Sentinel, which described the organization as “one of the most influential theatres in the region.”
